Are fashion makeup trends actually wearable off the runway?

Its a good question. How do fashion makeup trends actually effect us normal folk who are still trying to grasp the concept of using a foundation primer before a foundation?!?

What I will say is that NO, you do not need to follow makeup trends to feel that you are applying your makeup correctly, or even doing things the "right way". For the fashion industry, seasonal trends are quite important. For everyday wear, seasonal trends are fun and can help you discover and release your creative or wild side.

Trends: As mentioned earlier, trends are not to be taken as cookie cutters or mold's of how you should look or dress. Try to think of trends as inspiration, or even just a free ticket to express yourself the way that you want. Don't follow because it is trendy, follow because it feels right.

Without over analyzing everything and becoming a party pooper, I must say the artist inside of me gets super excited when new seasonal trends are released, so I have decided to create a cocktail of artistic and practical makeup techniques for the Fall Season.

Artistic Liner:

Artistic Liner

Just when you thought you mastered the cat eye with a liquid liner. This fun, artistic trend can be very wearable. Here are a few examples:

Wearable looks:

Dark Vampy Lips:

 Dark vampy lips

Dark vampy lips

it is no secret that dark lips and nude eyes have been on trend for a while now. What could be easier than simply throwing on a vampy shade and leaving the house for a night on the town. It is easy to be afraid of such a dark lip, but I highly suggest giving it a try. You have nothing to loose. (Most of my clients have been pleasantly surprised at the way a bold lip makes their eyes pop)

Green Beauty Shade Suggestions:

1. Elate Cosmetics in Tantric: (purchase now)

2. Rituel de Fille in Fortune Teller, Shadow Self, Night Wanderer and Chrysalis

3. Au Naturale Cosmetics in Spanish Rose

 Twiggy lashes

Twiggy lashes

Although not a fan of clumpy lashes myself, those of you that like to keep your mascara well past your best before date are rejoicing! A heavier mascara look paired with a bottom lash is on trend right now. Think Twiggy!

Expert tip:

When applying mascara to the bottom lashes, begin at the root near your water line and give you wand a gentle wiggle to the sides, rather than up and down. You want the majority of product to be along the lash line, then you can lightly bring the product down the lash for a more subtle look.

Fluorescent Colours:

Just because these product suggestions are natural dosnt mean we cant play with colour. This is one of my favourite trends because I LOVE me some colour...and those neon lights!

2. Root eyeshadow in Olivia

3. Gabriel Cosmetics nail polish in Lime

4. Well People mascara in Blue

Glossy Features:

Glossy features

This trend in particular is very wearable on the lips, however you may not find a time or a place to wear a "glossy lid". So why not embrace the trend and put up with your naturally glossy lids rather than powdering or trying to keep them matte all day long. This trend is typically achieved on the runway by using a lipgloss or petroleum jelly.

Green Beauty tip:

Stay clear of any petroleum based product, as it is a byproduct of crude oil. Environmentally, it is not a renewable resource and it seals off the skin and stops the skin from breathing. Instead consider trying a petroleum free product such as Waxelene or Live Clean Jelly.

You can use a Petroleum free jelly on the lids, cheek bone or lips for an added gloss effect.

Sparkles & Glitter:

 Sparkles & Glitter!

Sparkles & Glitter!

Time for the most exciting, and my personal favourite fall trend...SPARKLES!

For some, glitter is not even an option because it tends to get everywhere and difficult to remove, but with Showgrrrl Sh*t glitter, that is no longer a problem.

Showgrrrl Sh*t is a glitter company made by Vancouver Burlesque Dancers. They offer glitter pots, saline based glitter adhesive (safe for eyes) and shea butter based body glitter that is easily washed away in the shower.

How to wear glitter?

- Use glitter body butter on arms and legs for an extra sparkle

- Apply glitter to the top of the cheek bone, mimicking a highlighter

- Apply glitter near outside of eyes or on the brow bone

- Apply glitter as a liner

- If you are really feeling bold, you can wear glitter on your lips (this may not last, or be very comfortable)

5 makeup must have's for spring

Here in Vancouver, spring has been popping its head around every corner, and I am happy to say, It's finally here, Although it is feeling a bit closer to summer these days. The beautiful cherry blossoms, the weekend sunshine and the random rainfalls have us all a little confused on what is a weather appropriate outfit these days (I think we have all been caught out in the rain in our open toed shoes and capris and scorched in the sun a wreck beach). Luckily, our makeup products won't determine if we stay dry, warm or cool enough.

So lets go over some spring makeup must have's that you can start wearing RIGHT NOW, and make sure to scroll all the way to enter our Spring Giveaway:

1. Glowing, Highlighted Skin

How to use: When using a creme it is best to use the fingers. I pick up this product with my pointer finger and pat it onto the areas of my face that I would like to catch the light, or stand out more - cheek bones, down the bridge of the nose, on the brow bone, on the cupids bow and in the corner of the eye.

Where to buy:  I purchased my RMS living luminizer at the The Health Hut Boutique in Toronto

Note* The Health Hut sent me an RMS living luminizer to give away, Unfortunately it was stolen from my mail:(

2. Beautiful pink, glossy lips

How to use: I love this lipgloss because it gives a punch of colour and a smooth glossy finish. The applicator is medium sized and makes for an easy application without a mirror. Just throw it in your purse and touch up when you need.

Where to buy:  You can purchase this product right here at my online store

3. Warm, Coral Cheeks

How to use: Just like the living luminizer, this product is best applied with your fingers (once the product is warm in your hand). Pat onto the cheeks, lips or eyes as this is a multi use product. Great for moms, and women on the go!

Where to buy:  Right here on my online store.

4. Bold, Blue Eyes

How to use: Wearing blue eye shadow may feel like you are time traveling back to the 80's, but it can be used without going over the top. Start by using the shadow just to line the lash lines, or lightly blend all over the lid. If you are feeling adventurous build a smokey eye with all 3 colours.

Where to buy:  Get your eye trio atFitglow Beauty or in Vancouver at the Eco Diva popup shop at Nicole Bridger in Gastown.

5. Statement lips

How to use: This wild colour can be used light or bold, depending how you are feeling. Mix with some clear gloss or use your fingers and tap it onto the apples of your cheek for a bold and beautiful blush.

Where to buy:  Right here on my online store

I will be giving away these products to (1) lucky winner on Friday May 6th. Find it on Instagram starting today

Are you bold enough to go blue? Make sure to grab a limited edition liner in Freedom from Elate Cosmetics

Elate Cosmetics

I discovered this gem

before Elate was even called "Elate". In fact, I waited patiently for the line to launch and it slipped my mind until I re-discovered it on instagram (where I have found most of my clean cosmetic lines).

The first thing that drew me to this line, honestly, was the packaging. I hate to be "that person" who is sold on a product simply by looking at it, but with Elate this was just the case. A sustainable and re usable bamboo packaging is quite simply the way to my heart, In fact, all Elate packaging can be planted, eaten, recycled or reused.

So where does Elate cosmetics come from? Physically, the brand is from Victoria BC (my next door neighbour). Elate comes from a need. A need for Makeup Artists to have the ability to use the cleanest makeup products possible, while still delivering the same results a conventional product can. As a professional makeup artist herself, Melody has successfully delivered a line for professionals as well as everyday makeup users that is free from animal byproducts, animal testing, gluten, talc, synthetic fragrances and all those others nasty chemicals.

Well... is it any good?

Here are a few of the reasons I LOVE Elate cosmetics:

1. It is locally made. Local products have gained my trust and loyalty as I know exactly where they are coming from, who made them and that I am supporting my community. Elate also supports the community with $2 donated to Victoria Women's Transitional House from the sale of their "community colour" from each new collection and Elates "Create Kindness program" - Elate's monthly DIY workshops

2. The packaging is sustainable and reusable. It also look damn cute in your bag.

3. Elate is ALL about supporting Makeup Artists. It is actually quite rare to find a makeup line that is so dedicated to their biggest supporters and cheerleaders, Makeup Artists...which is quite ironic.

4. Real women & real results. Elate markets to and advertises with REAL WOMEN. Check out their catalogue here. These products provide real, beautiful results.

5. Elate's owner is extremely passionate about women and beauty. I spent the weekend with Melody and the Elate team and I was so inspired to continue to make a positive impact in this world, just as Melody does every single day.

I am ELATED about this product. I highly recommend it

Rituel de Fille

I discovered this gem

at The Cure Apothecary during my visit to Toronto this summer. As a makeup artist, anytime I spot a new makeup product that I have never tried before I am almost instantly at the mirror trying it on (the most bold colour of course). I jumped the gun on this product - I actually didn't read the ingredients before my mind had already said YES!! ("buy 5").

After speaking with Nitaha Goel at The Cure I was convinced it was a clean product (still, even before reading the label). I quote; Ritual de Fille "By weight, at least 99% of each of our formulas are made from pronouncable, minimally refined natural ingredients. The remaining 1% is a gentle preservative that is entirely paraben-free, phthalate-free and formaldehyde-free while offering much greater safety."

After a few years in the natural cosmetic industry I have come to realize it is all about making compromise. Yes this lipstick contains a preservative concoction of Phenoxyethanol & Potassium Sorbate (which rate a 4 and 3 on Skin Deep Database), but its a hell of a lot better that its nasty alternatives. Companies that put a full spectrum preservative in their cosmetics are doing it for your safety and the safety of their company - What if the product gets moldy or becomes unsafe and unusable because no full spectrum preservative was added. This leaves the DIY projects up to you to make for yourself at your discretion.

Well... is it any good?

I am extremely excited about this product for a few reasons:

1. The packaging & branding is brilliant. The concept is right up my alley and it is a small sleek product to keep in your purse.

2. The price point is epic. At only $23 a tube, this 99% natural lipstick is a reasonable price for the quality.

3. It is 99% natural ingredients. Synthetic dye free. Synthetic fragrance free. Paraben free. Phthalate free. Sulfate free & cruelty free.

4. The pigment is INSANE. Each and every colour I tried on was very pigmented and lasted on my lips for an impressive amount of time. (this is not a stain so yes, touch ups are needed)

YES! it is a good product, YES! I recommend it

Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Mica [CI 77019], Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Iron Oxide [77499], Silica (Silicon Dioxide), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Carnauba Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Carmine [CI 75470] (NOT VEGAN), Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, *Phenoxyethanol, *Caprylyl Glycol, *Potassium Sorbate, *Hexylene Glycol* (PRESERVATIVES)

* "Natural ingredients are our obsession, but we're also concerned with the safety of every product we create. If left unprotected, natural makeup has an extremely short shelf life—and quickly collects bacteria and other microbes from use. Phenoxyethanol is an anti-bacterial, while potassium sorbate is antifungal and anti-microbial. Caprylyl glycol and hexylene glycol hold them in suspension. This combination is extremely gentle on the skin, and keeps our products stable."

Application easier than {MAGIC)

Step 1:

When wearing a dark colour on your lips it is important to start with a clean + smooth base.

*scrub lips with coconut oil & brown sugar.

*apply concealer or foundation over mouth area

*apply a lip balm (dab off excess)

Step 2:

Always line lips before lipstick application. this ensures your colour stays in place

*pick a colour close to the lipstick (I chose plum from Jane Iredale, as it has a hint of purple)

*make sure your lipliner is sharpened for easier and precise application.

Step 3:

Filling in the entire lip with lipliner is important.

*unfortunately we are long beyond the 80's so avoid filling just the outside of the lip.

*try feathering the lip liner lightly as you get closer to the middle of the lip - this will give an ombre effect.

Step 4:

Its time for the magic.

*Using Ritual de Fille in "shadow side" or any colour your chose, carefully fill in the entire lip with colour.

*You may use a lip brush to do this if you find the lipstick size is too big - I actually found it quite perfect myself.

welcome, shadow side.

lets face it - we all have our shadows - the ego inside that strives for perfection. I thought I would share with you a few of my "beauty" shadows. There is nothing wrong with these parts of me, in fact, they make me who I am. The point is to acknowledge our shadows, say hello, embrace this side and continue to bring ourselves back into a conscious mind set.

- My shadow side likes to carefully pose and select photos for my blog because I want to look "good" for my viewers. I say don't always look like this, but I know I am always beautiful

My shadow side wants to look like women I find physically attractive. I will make small changes like dying my hair and dressing a certain way to look like someone who is not me. - I say "be yourself jacqueline, dress, act and be who you are, not who you want to be".

-Sometimes my shadow tells myself that I will never be a successful blogger because "its too late" - I say thats bull shit.

5 buildable steps to flawless skin

Want flawless makeup coverage without having to compromise your skins health?

I met up with creator of Sweet Leilani - Miss Leilani herself to discuss her brand and check out her gorgeous cosmetic lounge.

Sweet Leilani began from a desire to help women, men and children who were suffering from the effects of Cancer, burns and scarring. Leilani helps by providing safe cosmetics that are powerful enough to cover burns, pigmentation and scars and paramedical tattoo procedures.

Today was the perfect day to test out the power of Sweet LeiLani Face Line...

I woke up feeling less confident than normal. My skin has been acting up, breaking out and looking a little more dull than usual.

I always take these skin imperfections as a sign. "Jacqueline get more sleep, Don't stress yourself out, Get more exercise"

Going to bed too late during the holidays, trying to push through a few body injuries and creating un necessary stress has been very much a part of my life recently. My overall skin health relies on 4 things:

  1. My Diet & Supplement intake: I eat a healthy vegetarian diet (with cheats of course..I still love to indulge) and I take Lorna Vanderhaeghe supplements daily, along with fish oils and bee pollen.
  2. Exercise & Fresh Air: staying active is very important. Sweating will release unwanted toxins from your body, but spending everyday inside can be confining. It is so important for your skin and your mind to get fresh air and connect with nature.
  3. Skin care routine: Practicing a daily skin care routine is key to keeping your skin healthy. I stay away from harmful, pore clogging or "faux" ingredients in my skin care. I love products rich in vegetable oils.
  4. Your mind: I feel and look best when my mind is clear. Your thoughts are what create your reality. A mind that is stressed = skin that shows stress.

P.S...all photos are Raw and untouched.

This moisturizer is actually thick and...moisturizing. The tint is very pigmented! Not many tints like this out there.

When I first applied this product I laughed at how gorgeous it felt, then laughed at how flawless it looked...good things make me laugh

Need full coverage? This is your go to. I applied this as a concealer since the liquid foundation already did the trick for me.

A final touch of powder, highlight and contour. These powders are super diverse and super pigmented & powdery.
